I notice Marie-Claire that at no point did you attempt during your extremely intolerant rant, that you made no attempt to address any of the points which Stuart made in his well thought out piece.
I speak with two hats on I represent staff as a Trade Union Steward and see the levels of stress poor management leaves staff with. I accept that some are not genuine but most are. Trust me when you see stress manifesting itself in physical ways through secondary illnesses such as psoriasis it is not a sight you want to see twice.
I am also an LA Health and Safety Enforcement Officer within and EHD, the number of stress matters that are coming our way is increasing exponentially. Lawyers pulling in 70 hour weeks, driven to attempt suicide. Call centres were suicides have happened, remember these do not appear as work related deaths in HSE figures.
To use your own words the thing I find truly "disgusting" is that in the 21st century attitudes like yours from the 19th Century still exist.

Contact your LA Environmental Health Unit and they should have someone round to issue an improvement notice.

Yes, I see many European nations clamouring to give up their independence in an effort to drive down costs!
Health and Safety standards are absolutely atrocious in small Scandinavian countries for example, or are you just talking nonsense?

Nonsense, Geneva happened to be the place which hosted the conferences which led to the conventions. They would have been the Inverness Conventions if the highland capital had hosted the conference.
If you truly believed what you stated then you should start to read a bit more.

Mark, the reason that people should be given sick pay whilst off on holiday is not because it's some form of skive but because payment for holidays is a defered payment of wages. Holiday pay is noy a "benefit" but part of a contractual payment. Therefore if someone loses part of that payment through illness they shoyuld be allowed to pick it up through the standard sick pay process.

As for your own situation, more fool you. I do not expect you to get a reward in heaven for it though.

Er folks, the amount quoted is the claim the actual award is still to be made.

As for comments like that of Valerie's at the start of the thread I undersrtand where you are coming from but times cahnge. In the same wayslavery and sending kids down mines are unacceptable acts now, so is harrassment.

What is up with you people? All that is being asked is that during a period of fasting consideration is shown to those on fast. This is simply good manners, which at one time the English were famous for...

Interesting discussion but one serious area of concern is the exposure of school children to asbestos fibres in local authority schools.
As they will not show symptoms for 30 years or more it will be difficult to track the cases back, particularly as the data is collected with respect to occupational exposure. I have never seen any figures for pupils who went on to contract the disease.

The ban covers all incidences of smoking, from tobacco to shisha. What I am finding interesting is the apparent different reactions to the ban north and south of the Border. I am one of the staff who pursues complaints in Glasgow, there were originally to be 7 dedicated staff however the level of compliance was such that we only required 1.
Down south there seems to be a greater resistance to the legislation. Given the higher levels of smoking overall in Scotland, this is a surprise. Any thoughts on why this is the case?

I am led to believe that one of the reasons that Scottish local government pension funds (including Firefighters) are in a "healthier" state than those down south is that in general we die younger representing less of a drain on funds when retired.
This may mean it is easier to get rid of firefighters in Scotland.

A bit of an over-reaction. I used to work inspecting tankers and their drivers and they have an extremely stressful and more importantly dangerous job. This group of emplyees are paid the same as they were almost 15 years ago. It's about time their wages were increased and I support them 100%.

good luck finding a country without strikes, hear China has methods to stop employees withdrawing their labour.

What I can never undestand is the wholly negative attitude to Maternity rights concerning employment in the UK. Yet across the North Sea in Scandinavia business engages completely and positively with society.
There must be some connection between the way we regard family in this country as a burden and the collapse of families in society in general.

To Don Searle, two words from your own posting, "Harriet Hormone", if that isn't the statement of an imbecile, God help us.

Come on, are you people serious?

First of all with regard to the "possibility" that any employer will be "sued" for a member of the public calling a member of staff "Love, duck or whichever term of endearment" is used in the North of England, where does this arise. Oh I see in the mind of the writers of that esteemed organ the Daily Mail. Well known for their expertise in matters relating to Employment Tribunals.
As anyone will tell you, you jump through hoops to get there and they do not tolerate spurious or absurd complaints.

Take a closer look at the opening two comments on this thread, from people on a site designed for professional use who seem unable to raise themselves above a level of imbecillity. Others, less offensively but with a similar degree of ignorance, talk of going to court over what is self-evidently an ET matter. So...

...here goes, I did not suggest that banter should be legislated against, I simply meant that the discussion on this thread had disappeared up an alley of "ee oop, when I were lad" navel gazing which was obscuring the fact that staff in the service industry should expect to be treated with a degree of respect which you would give to any other employee. I emphasised that along with my firm belief that I expect all staff to treat any colleague with the same respect that you would accord a member of your own family.
That seems to represent "common sense" as opposed to speculating on a piece of nonsense written by a reactionary right-wing propaganda sheet.

Enough of this cheery northern banter, there is a serious side to this which is that it is unacceptable to treat members of staff as objects.

A friend owns a bar here in Glasgow anf has operated a zero tolerance approach to sexual harrassment of staff for years. His reasoning? he wouldn't want it happening to his girlfriend or sister so why accept it for a member of his staff. Now that is REAL common sense.

Given that couple did not appear to object to the previous status of non-religious marrriages and did not appear to complain about civil marriages, then this is not an issue about the religious status of marriage but is more likely to be an issue about homophobic bigotry.

There is long standing and extensive evidence that music at work improves morale and increases productivity. This was extensively studied during the second world war and music at work was a significant part of the morale and propoganda operation exercised during the war.
