Stress management special
Has the perception of stress in the workplace become too anti-employer?
The long-awaited HSE stress management standards will be published on 3 November 2004.
While there appears to be no argument that work-related stress is an issue that needs addressing, what is in question is what exactly stress is and who the responsibility for it really lies with.
Pressure itself is not necessarily a bad thing - in fact in short bursts it can be good for you and many people thrive on it. But it's when individual experience that pressure as excessive that feelings of stress can result. The HSE defines stress as "the adverse readtion people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them."
Whatever your views on stress, it is undoubtedly a problem for the workforce.
