Old git, or still work fit?
It’s an extreme scenario to consider the face of your company might one day be our man on the front cover, if, under developing age discrimination laws, the concept of a retirement age is one day entirely abolished. But it’s a point that needs considering: don’t all employers want to present their clients and potential clients with a dynamic (I didn’t say young!) team of energetic, on-the-pulse employees? Can the same be achieved with a team of over-65s?If, indeed, there was no retirement age at all, employers could find themselves in the perhaps more favourable position of negotiating a suitable retirement time with each individual; based on their real abilities and health status. It’s an ideal that could work if employers and employees are in agreement over the employee’s performance. But in a less idyllic scenario, employers may be faced with dismissing on the grounds of performance those employees who have shown great loyalty to the firm over a number of years.
