A college has been prosecuted for failing to ensure the safety of its employees, after a tutor received serious chemical burns and cuts.
The court heard how welding tutor, Gary Baird, had mixed concentrated nitric acid and 96% ethanol regularly over a period of three years to make nital acid etching solution which was used to test the welds done by students. On 2 May 2006, a bottle of the acid exploded on his desk, causing injuries to Baird.
